"I’m often asked about my lyrical inspirations and have engaged in plenty of lovely discussions on the topic over the years. As I’m happy to explain, my approach to lyric-writing is always partly autobiographical; indeed, I would argue that all art is necessarily so to some extent. However, the part that’s most important to me is how people then construct and find their own personal meanings and significance when they listen – that’s what makes music so beautifully subjective, and our engagements with songs so emotionally powerful and complex. Fascinating stuff! I’m also an avid reader, and am hugely inspired by the ideas, concepts and experiential worlds that I encounter via that channel; both fictional and non-fictional.
One of my most deeply rooted curiosities is around the universal emotions and experiences that make us all human and, within that, I’m particularly interested in the sociological, relational, psychodynamic and affective properties of interpersonal relationships.
Love’s Lost Property explores the idea of “love”, as we experience it in all its guises and across a range of relationships, for example with our families, friends or intimate partners. Love can heal and can destroy; it can bring us comfort and it can wound us deeply; it can draw us together and drive us apart. It’s completely intangible and often impossible to articulate fully in language, and yet it’s what unites us as humans, for better or worse.
We might wonder what happens to love when a relationship of any kind comes to an end for any kind of reason. Where does the “love” go and what happens to it? Can it be reclaimed, or is it gone for good? Does it show up again in a different shape or form later or elsewhere? What would happen if we could go back to the place at which we think perhaps we lost it and observe where it’s been kept (and by whom) since then?"
